Success with Fulfillment
Leadership & Ethics in Action
Foremost in the list of essential knowledge for those who aspire to improve their lives is the understanding of the nature of action and its causes and effects. The study of action cannot be isolated from the motivation for action and how human desires, values, and ethics influence thoughts and drives actions.
There are three key considerations as they pertain to leadership and ethics:
- Actions cannot be divorced from ethics if they are to be meaningful and fulfilling.
- Actions of an organization or of individuals in the organization must be ethical to be purposeful.
- Purposeful Leadership incorporates positive ethical values and is aimed at serving others beyond self.
Authority & Power
Authority is the power to perform and command successfully. There are two types of authority, and these are positional and personal. The higher the position a person occupies in an organization, the wider the range of authority the person has. Personal authority is the influence a person possesses regardless of their position in the organiation. The relationship between authority and leadership can be summarized by the following two key points:
- Effective leadership cannot exist without authority and authority without leadership cannot exist.
- Leadership endows power, but power does not ensure leadership.
When considering the paradigm...the link between power and leadership is inevitable. Without one, the other becomes insignificant. Leadership and power are as tied together as x and y on the Cartesian plane.
